In this WebQuest, we will explore what qualities define one of the most successful groups of living things, insects! These diverse ancient animals have conquered many environments on earth due to their unique abilities and traits.
The mosquito is the deadliest animal in the world. Their ability to carry and spread disease to humans causes millions of deaths every year. For this reason, sustained mosquito control efforts and constant research are important to prevent outbreaks from these diseases. Biological control agents are an extremely safe and effective tool and should always be considered as part of a comprehensive Integrated Mosquito Management program. This WebQuest will introduce you to the basic mosquito biology, mosquito borne illnesses and transmission, biological controls, and the use of bioassays to monitor resistance among our mosquito populations.
The history of insecticide use, for both mosquito control and major agricultural purposes is long. It is important for scientists to continually monitor and detect for the emergence of an insecticide-resistant strain of mosquitoes. This WebQuest will introduce you to the history of pesticide use, control and the use of susceptibility testing to monitor resistance among our mosquito populations.
